When the General Election was announced, we saw this as an unmissable opportunity to teach our young people about democracy and engage them with the political process. With the fantastic help of Alison Eden, we organised a real political hustings for our Year 10 and Year 12.
The hustings was attended by five of the eight parliamentary candidates for the Newton Abbot constituency: Cllr Martin Wrigley (Liberal Democrats), Jacob Cousens (Labour), Anne Marie Morris (Conservative), Liam Mullone SDA make me your MP (South Devon Alliance), and Pauline Wynter (Green Party).
The students asked some challenging questions, including how they were planning to support young people with access to university, and their plans to improve the chances of young people getting on the housing ladder.
Well done to everyone who took part, and we hope this experience has helped you to make your decision for our mock election!
